Ongoing Studies
Gender and Relationships Study
The Gender & Relationships Study: We are currently conducting a research study about gender, femmephobia, femininity, violence, relationships and relationship conflict.
While the survey is open to anyone over 18, we are especially interested in hearing from FEMMES and LGBTQIA+ participants of various sexual orientations, including those who are cisgender, transgender, genderqueer, nonbinary, bigender, gender diverse, gender questioning, men, women, agender, etc.
Participants must be 18 years old or older and have computer access.
Participation involves completing an online survey that asks for your sociodemographic information, and a series of questions about gender, femininity, violence, relational conflict experiences, and your mental well-being. If you identify as femme, you may also be asked whether you wish to participate in an in-depth online interview to discuss your answers in more detail and, if so, for your contact information to schedule the online interview. If you are invited for an interview and you agree, a letter providing more information will be provided at a later date. It is possible that not all participants that indicate interest in an interview will be invited to participate. Participation in the survey takes 30 minutes, and eligible participants will be entered in a prize draw for a $100 Gift Card. Participation in the interview takes 60-90 minutes, and eligible participants will be paid $25 CAD.
The Gender Pressure Study
The Gender Pressure Study: Women’s experiences of gender policing are complex and contradictory. For instance, women face stigma if they act overly masculine but, at the same time, are also encouraged to act more masculine within certain contexts (Blair & Hoskin; 2015; 2016). On the other hand, women are pressured to act “appropriately” feminine, which can be experienced as pressure to be either more or less feminine. Previous research has chronicled the contradictory nature of these experiences, and ample attention has been paid to experiences of being pressured to be less masculine/more feminine, but few have considered the full scope of gender policing women face, including pressures to be less feminine/more masculine. This is not due to a lack of evidence, as prior research has documented seemingly isolated instances of this phenomenon, particularly in contexts such as the workplace, politics, feminist spaces, and LGBTQIA+ communities. These experiences, however, have yet to be systematically analyzed. Using an online survey, the current study aims to remedy these gaps by looking at the full spectrum of gender policing experienced by women. For more information and to participate, click here.
Support & Addiction Recovery Survey
Support & Addiction Recovery Survey: Are you in recovery from a drug or alcohol addiction or know someone who is? Are you 18 years of age or older? If so, we would love to hear from you in this new study conducted by researchers at Trent University. We are interested in understanding more about how identifying as an addict in recovery impacts the social support received from loved ones. This study will ask you questions about well-being, social support, active addiction and recovery from addiction. The survey takes most people 15-40 minutes to complete. After finishing the survey, you will have the chance to be entered into a monthly prize draw for a $50 CAD gift card and a $150 CAD grand prize gift card! There are two versions of the study. One is for individuals who consider themselves to be “in recovery” from any form of drug or alcohol addiction. The other is for loved ones (friends, family members, co-workers, etc.) of individuals who are in some stage of recovery related to a drug or alcohol addiction. To begin the survey, please click the button that describes you below. If both buttons describe you (i.e., you are in recovery and a loved one is also in recovery), you may complete either survey and at the end you will be given an option to also complete the other survey.

Understanding Femmephobia: Femmephobia is defined as the devaluation and regulation of femininity across society, especially in those who do not fit into feminine societal norms (Hoskin, 2020). This exploratory study seeks to better understand this concept by looking into the experiences and impacts of femmephobia among those who identify as femme. This will be done through an online survey and optional in-depth interview to expand upon participant’s responses. As researchers have only begun to understand societal perceptions and judgements on femininity, the concept of femmephobia provides a unifying term to encapsulate the experiences of a wide array of feminine individuals, both separate from and overlapping with the form woman/female. As a result, this study adds to the growing body of scholarly work assessing femmephobia with the aim of better understanding the impact of femmephobia on the lived experiences of femme people.
Femme & Femininity: The purpose of this study is to explore how femmes express differences and similarities between femme and femininity. Individuals aged 18 and older who have access to the Internet and a computer, who identify as femme, and who can read and write in English are invited to participate in this study. Individuals with vision-related disabilities may not be able to participate. People of all relationship types, sexualities, genders, and experiences are welcome. The survey cannot be accessed from a mobile device.
Sexual Minority Women’s Gender Style: The purpose of this study is to explore the gender style of sexual minority women. Individuals aged 18 and older who have access to the Internet and a computer, who identify as sexual minority women (e.g., gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, queer, asexual, etc.), and who can read and write in English are invited to participate in this study. Individuals with vision-related disabilities may not be able to participate. All relationship types, sexualities, and experiences are welcomed. This study is inclusive of all women who identify as a sexual minority.
